Confirmation

“Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for the Spirit had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus."
(Acts 8:14-16).”

“To be confirmed means to make a “covenant” with God. The confirmand says, “Yes, I believe in you, my God; give me your Spirit, so that I might belong entirely to you and never be separated from you and may witness to you throughout my whole life, body and soul, in my words and deeds, on good days and bad.” And God says, “Yes, I believe in you, too, my child—and I will give you my Spirit, my very self. I will belong entirely to you. I will never separate myself from you, in the life or eternally in the next. I will be in your body and your soul, in your words and deeds. Even if you forget me, I will still be there—on good days and bad.”
-YOUCAT, 205

At this Church, the Sacrament of Confirmation is normally received in the 8th grade. The young person is invited to enroll in the Parish Religious Education Confirmation class and attend the sessions on a regular basis. The Bishop of the Diocese will administer Confirmation on a date determined at the beginning of the PRE year.

If a young person is in High School and has not received the Sacrament of Confirmation the parents are invited to contact the Director of Religious Education and we will ensure that they receive the formation they need to receive Confirmation.

An adult seeking the Sacrament of Confirmation is invited to enroll in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Please contact Deacon Mike Blomè at 901-569-8183 to learn more.

Here are the usual requirements for a Confirmation sponsor according to the Canon Law of the Catholic Church:
  • A sponsor must be someone other than the parent of the one to be confirmed.
  • A sponsor must have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist.
  • A sponsor must be at least 16 years of age and may be male or female regardless of the sex of the candidate.
  • A sponsor must be leading a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken; therefore, if married, must be married in the Church and if single, must be striving to live a chaste life and therefore cannot be living with a person outside of marriage.
  • A sponsor must be a practicing Catholic, registered in a parish, who regularly attends Mass on Sundays and Holy Days and receives the Holy Eucharist.
