[Jesus] said in reply, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.”
- Mt. 19:4-6
The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is, like all sacraments, taken very seriously within the Holy Mother Church. For this reason, the reception of this Sacrament requires a minimum of 6 months of purposeful time of prayer, preparation and of openness between both the man and the woman, but also and ever so important, an openness with God, while guided either by the Priest, or one of his delegates entrusted to walk side by side with the couple during this precious time.
The Catholic Diocese of Memphis in West Tennessee requires that the couples complete 3 important steps for the reception of the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony.
Step One: Six (6) months to a year before your wedding date, contact your Parish priest. You can expect to meet with the priest or deacon several times to complete and go over the Pre-Nuptial Marriage Investigation; take the Focus survey; go over results of the survey; and to plan the liturgy for your wedding day. If you have a former marriage, you will need to receive a Declaration of Invalidity before a wedding date can be scheduled.
Step Two: Register for the diocesan marriage preparation class. This class is designed as a tool to help you and your fiancé prepare for a lifetime marriage. We highly recommend you attend the earliest class possible before your wedding date.
Step Three: Register and attend one of the diocesan Natural Family Planning Class series (NFP). Natural Family Planning is an all-natural method, scientifically based on the woman’s patterns of fertility and infertility. It promotes romance, respect and communication between husband and wife. It can deepen the intimacy between you and your spouse, strengthen your relationship and give you peace.
